Learn More Globally recognised as the original skate shoe brand, Vans sneakers have long been synonymous with comfort, durability, and versatility. Designed to be beaten up on the board, the scuffs, tears and marks from a good old worn pair of Vans are just some of the things that makes each pair so unique. With this in mind, Vans sneakers have always been a kind of canvas for self-expression – whether that’s through scribbed-on soles, rips and tears and even painted canvases, so it’s no surprise that people often want to switch up the lacing system too. From classic cross lace style, to bar laces, zip laces and even tips for hiding them all together, if you’re wondering how to lace Vans then read on to find out more. How to Cross Lace Vans Shoes

We love to cross lace our Vans kicks – especially the Old Skool and Vans Authentic silhouettes. Fact is, criss-cross lacing is far more comfortable than any other lacing style, as the crossovers occur at the side of the foot, so the feel is more even and there is less pressure on the top of your foot. Chances are you already know how to cross lace, but if you need a quick refresher, follow our step-by-step guide below to find out how.

  1. Starting at the toe-end of the shoe, thread each end of the laces through the right and left eyelets, going from the top inwards. This will create a straight bar.
  2. From here, cross the ends of the laces over and thread the right-hand lace into the left eyelet (from the top, inwards) and do the same from left to right.
  3. Keep criss-crossing the laces and threading them through until you’ve laced it up enough for your liking. If you have wide feet, leave a few eyelets spare for a roomier fit, but if you like a tight fit, go all the way up to the last eyelets!
  4. To tighten the laces, simply pull at the crosses all the way down.

How to Bar Lace Vans Shoes

If you’re not a fan of the cross-lace look, you can always bar lace your Vans instead. Bar lacing just means straight laces, but bear in mind this works best on shoes with an even number of eyelets as you’ll get a neater finish. Bar lacing is a pretty comfortable lacing method, as it helps to take pressure off the upper of your foot. How do you do it? Find out below.

  1. For the bar lace, start the same way as you did for the cross-lace method. Pull the left side of the lace down through the left eyelet, and the right side of the lace down through the right eyelet.
  2. Pull the left lace up through the eyelet directly above it on the left side.
  3. The right lace will need to skip the eyelet above it, so pull this lace up through the third-to-the-bottom eyelet on the right. This should leave the second eyelet on the right-hand side empty.
  4. Take the left lace and thread it top-down through the empty eyelet on the right.
  5. Now, take the original right-hand lace and bring it over to the third eyelet on the left side, pulling it through from the top inwards.
  6. Repeat this process again until all the eyelets are laced!

How to Lace Vans Sk8 Hi Shoes

Vans Sk8 Hi sneakers are probably one of the brand’s best-selling silhouettes. Personally, we prefer to cross-lace our Sk8 Hi’s, but if you bar lace them, you’ll get a tighter fit which is perfect for both on and off the board. You can even switch your lace style to match your mood! Go bar lace one day and cross lace the next, we won’t judge. How to Lace Vans – Vans Era Shoes How to Lace Vans – Vans Era Shoes

How To Hide Shoelaces On Vans

If you don’t like the look of tied laces or you want to prevent the laces getting caught under your board or in your bike chain, tucking them away is probably the best option. But, if you’ve ever done this, you’ll know how annoying it can be when the aglets dig into your ankle! We’ve got a few tips and tricks that might help…

  1. When you’ve decided how many aglets you want to lace, ensure the last pair has your laces going through from the top inwards. Then, instead of tying your laces from the outside, tie the bow behind the tongue and tuck it behind so the laces are hidden.
  2. If you like your shoes to have a seriously skater vibe, pull out the laces so they’re loose and the aglets will sit just atop the eyelets, then you don’t need to fasten at all!
